Some videos from the clincher

Sitting here on my couch watching the parade. I still can’t believe the Giants won the World Series. It’s weird for me, but not in the same way it is for all of you. I am not a Giants fan. The Giants are just part of my job. Still, there is something really neat about the Giants winning the World Series. It’s like if your neighbor wins the lottery. Doesn’t change your life any. There’s no reason for you to be happy. But it’s kinda neat to see something so great happen to that guy who you have seen every day getting his mail.
Anyway, congratulations to the Giants and to all of you out there who have spent so long rooting for them.
Meanwhile, here’s what I’ve got. I assume by now that you have seen my story from the clincher. I probably overplayed the whole Giants underdog thing…
There was no way that any thoughtful analysis in spring training or over the summer or in September or even last week could come up with the scene that unfolded here on a cool November night.
Heck, I picked the Giants to win when the Series began, and so did a few other people. A minority, yes, but there were people out there who thought the Giants would win. I think I just got a little carried away. The Giants did win 92 games, two more than the Rangers. They played in a tougher division than the Rangers, albeit in a worse league. They beat a better team in the LCS than the Rangers did. They had a better rotation than the Rangers. They had home-field advantage.
Really, I think beating the Phillies was more of an accomplishment than beating the Rangers.

I’ve been pretty happy with the way the Giants have performed in this World Series, but it’s not because I care whether the Giants win. It’s because they are making me look smart. Usually, that’s pretty tough to do. In fact, usually I’m wrong about my predictions in these sort of things.
However, if you go back to before this series started, one of the reasons I picked the Giants, while most of my colleagues were picking the Rangers is because good pitching beats good hitting. There seemed to be a current of opinion heading into this series that Giants got by the Phillies because the vaunted Philadelphia offense was in a rut, but the Rangers were hot. They had just scored a ton of runs against the Yankees.
As I pointed out repeatedly, including here in “print” and here on video, the Phillies weren’t actually in a rut. The Phillies had been hitting and scoring just fine until they ran into the Giants. I suggested that the same might happen to the Rangers. (When I made this tweet last night, a lot of my followers didn’t pick up the sarcasm.)
And guess what? The Rangers have been shut out twice — the first team to get blanked twice in one series since 1966 — and they are hitting .211 against the Giants.
