Playoff picture coming into focus

As of this morning, the Giants are looking pretty good to go to the playoffs. Even though they only have a one-game lead on the Braves for a playoff spot, coolstandings.com figures them to have an 83 percent chance of going to the playoffs.
Further, it’s looking like the possible matchups are pretty clear, since the Phillies are going to have the best record and the Reds are going to have a worse record than whoever wins the West. Because the Reds lose the tie-breaker against the Giants and Padres, they are essentially two games back today.
So, if the Giants win the West and the Braves are the wild card (35.2 percent), the Giants will host the Braves.
If the Giants win the West and the Padres are the wild card (17.1 percent), the Giants will host the Reds. This is the one that I’d like to see.
If the Giants are the wild card (15.6 percent), they’ll travel to Philadelphia. That’s certainly the worst scenario for the Giants.
There is also a chance that the Giants could win the West with a worse record than the Reds and the Braves as the wild card (7.0 percent). In that case the Giants would also start in Philadelphia.
All of this could be interesting over the weekend. If we get to the last day and the Giants and Padres are both in, but playing to decide who wins the division, that won’t be an insignificant prize. It’s the difference between starting at home and facing Bronson Arroyo, Jonny Cueto and Edinson Volquez and starting on the road and facing Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels.
I wouldn’t sacrifice a potential Game 1 playoff starter for the sake of winning that last game, but otherwise I would pull out all the stops to win.
