Travelogue, Day 21: The Rock

For today’s adventure, I went to Rockefeller Plaza to see if I could become a writer for a Saturday Night Live. Hey, I’m funny. Seriously, I just went because it was an easily accessible (read: has its own subway stop) place where I could go up and see the whole city.
Well, it wasn’t quite as easily accessible as I figured. I knew there’d be a lot of tourists there, and I figured I might even have to wait in line, but it was full-on Disneyland. Wait in this line. Go up the elevator to wait in this line. Pile into this roped-off area to wait while we show you a little video. Move into this line to wait for the elevator. Sheesh. Must have taken me 20 minutes from the time I bought my ticket till I was actually at the observation deck. Oh well. I had nothing else to do.

Down at the bottom, I checked out the famous little skating rink, and got a shot of the Rock from below.

And here is where the famous Christmas tree goes.

And, finally, Radio City across the street.

OK, all that pretty much proves that I am really in New York. I have now spent the past two mornings being the only American tourist at Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Natural History. Next up for me on Friday is a train-trip to Philadelphia. Not sure if I’ll take in any of the historical sites there. I will be having a cheesesteak, though.
As for the game last night, I ended up staying in the media work room instead of going up to the Aux Box, which I was told was a nightmare. It was cold and wet and there were no TVs, so you really couldn’t see the game. It was the first time in my journalism career that I covered a game that I didn’t actually see with my own eyes. Watched it on TV in the work room. I would feel kind of guilty about that, but there were a lot of high profile, veteran writers who were doing the same thing. This press box is not small, by any means, but I just think there is more media here than at a typical World Series, because it’s the Yankees.
Tonight, I get to use the lone FanHouse seat in the main press box, so I’ll actually see the game.
Oh, last night I wrote a story about Chase Utley, if you want to read it.
