Travelogue, Day 20: A day at the museum

It was raining this morning, so I didn’t really want to go marching all around Manhattan, but I also didn’t want to sit in my hotel room. I couldn’t even sleep in that late because all the hot water in the hotel was going to be shut off at 10 am (some maintenance thing), so I had to be up and showered before then. So I ended up going to the Museum of Natural History, in search of Ross Geller.

Seriously, I figured it would be a moderately interesting way to kill a few hours in the morning and early afternoon, and it would keep me dry. It was also just a short cab ride across town to get there, and it was right on the subway to get from there to the ballpark.

Here’s who was in the museum today…

  • Tourists babbling in foreign languages.
  • Thousands of disinterested school kids doing.
  • Old people.
  • Me.

It was actually reasonably interesting. I’m sure I learned a few things, like the fact that the sun is expanding and one day it’s basically going to melt the earth. I’m pretty sure that day is not coming for at least a few years, give or take a million. The dinosaur stuff was cool, as well as the stuff about the origin of man.

Insert your own joke here. Actually, I think I saw one of these guys outside Yankee Stadium, waiting for tickets.

Oh, I also ate lunch at the museum, where I was delighted to find one of New York’s famous “Black and White cookies.” You must remember it from Seinfeld. It was quite tasty. More like a cake than a cookie. Mmm.

The only bad part of the day was that I had to drag around my backpack with the laptop in it all day. That was a pain, literally.

Then I took the subway to the ballpark, avoiding a potentially troubling situation by trusting my iPhone. The line I wanted to take actually only runs to the Stadium at rush hour, but my iPhone app set me straight. I saw my first New York subway performer today. He did a little break-dance thing. “Hey buddy, 1983 is calling.”

Anyway, after all that, I’m finally at the ballpark. Check back tomorrow to see how this goes. We have one seat in the main press box, and at least two of us are here. I’m going to defer to Ed for the seat for today, and I’ll take it tomorrow. Right now I’m set up in the media work room behind the press box. Not sure yet if I’ll venture up to the Aux Box when the game begins. I’d probably see the game better just sitting here and watching it on TV.

The New York Historical Society is right across from the Museum of Natural History. Worth a visit. Even better is the Metropolitan Museum on 87th. Also the Jewish Museum, on 92nd. Both near your hotel.
