Travelogue, Day 2: A sad story

Everything was going along smoothly today, normally, until I went back up from the interview room to the press box and found a security guard there, blocking the entrance. He said no one could go in because there was a “medical emergency.” We learned a little later than someone had died in the press box. There was no official cause of death, but the rumor was he had a heart attack. He was not a Dodger employee or a member of the media, so the assumption was that he was a maintainance person contracted from outside.

Since none of the media members could get into the press box to retrieve their stuff, Dodgers employees went in and brought out each person’s laptop and bag, and we all filtered into luxury boxes down the hall. So you had a bunch of writers sitting on couches, on bar stools, banging away at their keyboards. The news never stops.

clubhouseI mentioned earlier how the Dodger Stadium clubhouses are small. Well, here’s a picture that shows a bunch of reporters milling around in the clubhouse for the player availability before the workout. What’s that you say? You don’t see any players there? Well, of course not. There were a solid dozen players in the clubhouse when the doors first opened. Then they closed it for a 10-minute meeting, and when we were let back in, it was 100 reporters and Clayton Kershaw. And then Kershaw left.

So it’s about 5 and I’m finally done. I wrote two short posts about the Dodgers (this and this), and another story that will show up on MLB FanHouse sometime before Game 1 starts on Wednesday.

Now, I’m not sure what to do, since traffic is going to be a nightmare getting anywhere from here. Dodger Stadium is pretty much right in the center of LA, so there’s no quick way to get from here to anywhere.

Oh, the other good news is that the Yankees confirmed they are playing on Wednesday, so the Dodgers game will start at 3 pm PT on Thursday, so I’ll be able to comfortably make my flight after the game.
