Travelogue, Day 11: A day without a ballpark

Today was the day that didn’t quite work with the FanHouse master plan of leaving me in Southern California and having Ed Price handle New York and Philadelphia. All four teams were back East, the Yankees and Angels playing a phenomenal Game 2 (more on that later) and the Dodgers and Phillies working out in Philadelphia. Because I wasn’t in Philadelphia to get an offday story, I had to piece together something from extra stuff I got during the three days the Dodgers and Phillies were in LA, and I wound up with this story on Charlie Manuel. I wrote it before leaving Dodger Stadium on Friday night, so today I essentially had a day off.

I slept in till around 8:30 — that’s sleeping in for a guy with kids — and then went to the beach for a little run. Then I came back to the hotel and watched some football and read a ton of stories online about the playoffs. After that, I went and met my old college roommate for lunch in San Clemente, which is halfway between here and San Diego, where he lives. It was an hour drive each way, with only a little traffic. Weather was great down there. Lunch was good. Got back to my hotel just in time to watch the Yankees-Angels.

Wow. What a game. This whole playoff season has been just phenomenal. I hope you guys have been watching this stuff. Just about every game has been exciting. I participated in a live chat with my FanHouse colleagues during the game. We’ve been doing that during all the LCS games, so I hope you guys are checking them out. When it was raining pretty hard during tonight’s game, I thought there was a chance they’d have to stop the game and finish it Sunday, which would have left me out here again with nothing to do.

As it is, there will be some sort of workout and player availability on Sunday in Anaheim. Considering that the teams won’t be touching down in California until about 5 a.m., I’m wondering just what’s going to happen. I’m guessing there will be some press conferences, but no workouts.
