First-pitch swinging: good, but bad

Posted By on September 7, 2009 5:00 pm

Folks, I was just updating the WordPress software and figure, as long as I’m here, might as well post something. What the heck, maybe I’ve still got a reader or two. It’s also a good opportunity for me to use the new super-cool sharing feature at Baseball-Reference.com.

Most Giants fans get all worked up about how often the Giants swing at the first pitch and make an out, so I looked up their numbers when putting the first pitch in play. Would you be surprised to know the Giants actually have hit .314 when putting the first pitch in play?

Pretty good, you think.

Not really, the league average is .329. The Giants rank 12th in the league. The chart is after the jump.

That’s all I’ve got for you today. Watched bits and pieces of the game today, along with the Rockies game. I think it’s gonna be a good race.

I’ll try to do some more posting to my blog for the stretch drive, since I will be watching the Giants (and Rockies) closely.

heard the other day on the radio that roy steele was going to be on the a’s postgame show. any idea on how he’s doing and if he’ll ever get back to being the pa for one last a’s game or what hsi situation is?

i remember a couple of years ago he got quite ill and i’d have to imagine that it’s his health that has stopped him from continueing to work the games, but still, it would be nice to know how the voice of god is and what his future plans are.
