It's FanHouse! :)

I'm not sure Beane had a specific idea like "Now I'm building for 2009" or "Now I'm building for 2010." I think that in the cases of the four guys they acquired, he saw them all as relatively low-risk acquisitions that would certainly help, to some degree.

(I say Holliday was low risk because the A's apparently had decided they didn't need Smith, Street or Gonzalez, and they knew they can either get back prospects or draft picks when he's gone.)

Your article on Fanpost was interesting. I remember that Cabrera mentioned seeing the team as one that could contend as one reason he signed with the A's.

Do you believe that Beane saw a chance to contend in a potentially weak AL west when he traded for Holliday and later added Giambi, Nomar and Cabrera? Or did he think it was simply to get some more offense for his young pitchers, as he told you?

I still think he had overly optimistic views on the health of Chavez and Duchscherer.
