Cheering Molina’s triple from afar

| April 29, 2009

Turns out that Bengie Molina’s brother Jose was in the Yankees clubhouse watching on TV just as Bengie hit his first triple in nearly two years.

Here’s an interesting note in the New York Times about how the Molina brothers keep up with each other.

(Jose) Molina has a system. At home, he has the baseball package on TV, so after a game, he will usually catch the Giants’ game from the West Coast. He also records the Giants and Cardinals whenever possible to watch for later.

On the road (and at home, too), Molina has a Blackberry alert system that lets him know everything his brothers do in each game. He showed me the screen and clicked on the alerts, line after line of type about Bengie and Yadier (“my little brother,” Jose said), instantly delivered.

Beane chat moved to Friday

| April 28, 2009

Billy Beane’s chat at AOL FanHouse has been pushed back 24 hours because Billy had a conflict. So now it’s Friday at 10:30 a.m. PT (The time is eastern in the box below. Don’t be confused.)

Sorry for the late change.

Me and Barry in the elevator

| April 27, 2009

I missed Barry Bonds before the game when he gave a brief interview to the Giants’ three beat writers, so after he got done in the Giants TV and radio booths, I grabbed him in the elevator on the way back downstairs.

He was quite pleasant, and essentially gave me the 45-second version of what he had said to the other guys. He’s still working out, but he wouldn’t say that he’s retired.

“Do you still want to play?” I asked.

“I want to go back to my seat,” he said with a smile.

It’s odd. I wonder why he’s so reluctant to just say he’s retired. It’s obvious he’s not going to play again. Doesn’t he know that he can’t be immortalized on the Giants’ Wall of Fame until he retires?

Brian Wilson and Twitter-gate

| April 27, 2009

If you missed the whole Brian Wilson Twitter thing, click here to see what happened and what I think about it.

Long story short, Wilson Tweeted at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning about the Scottdale, Ariz., nightlife, then blew a save against the Diamondbacks about 15 hours later. Wilson says he was joking. Fact is, he shouldn’t Twitter anything that he doesn’t want people to read.

Follow me on Twitter

| April 27, 2009

I’ve joined the Twitter generation (mostly so I can keep track of how late Brian Wilson is staying up). Seriously, I figured all the cool kids are doing it, so I might as well. Also, you Giants and A’s fans might get more out of me now. I’m more likely to be able to squeeze out 140-character tweets on the local teams in between my real job than I am to write whole big posts here. (Although I will still try.)

Anyway, if you wanna be one of my followers, I’m JeffFletcherAOL.

The greatest prospect ever?

| April 27, 2009

Just got back from San Diego, where I saw Stephen Strasburg pitch. Thought some of you might be interested in reading about the guy who has been called the best prospect ever.

I’m not a scout, but he looked pretty damn filthy to me. He throws 100 mph (legit) and he has a big, hard breaking ball.

One GM told me that he’d be his team’s No. 2 starter right now (and his No. 1 is an All-Star). He also said he’d pay five years, $50 million if that’s what it took to get him.

Multimedia Man

| April 26, 2009

I did an interview with Marty Lurie on the A’s pregame show today. You can hear it here.

I also did a thing with Vince Cotroneo on another part of the A’s pregame show. No link for that one. You had to be there.

Finally, I’m scheduled to make my debut on Chronicle Live on Wednesday night at 5. Set your DVRs so you can watch it over and over.
