Lotta wins for the Dodgers

Posted By on March 16, 2009 2:22 pm

This afternoon against the A’s, the Dodgers started Jason Schmidt, followed by Jeff Weaver. Shawn Estes entered in the third inning.  Schmidt has 128 major league victories, followed by 101 for Estes and 93 for Weaver. That’s 322 big league victories among three guys pitching for one team in the first three innings of one spring training game.

That’s pretty neat, even though colleague Mychael Urban of mlb.com is ragging me incessantly for caring about such trivia.

I have no idea when a team may have rolled out that many victories in one spring training game, but just to give you an idea of how rare it may be, there are not that many active pitchers with 100 victories. If you take out all of the guys from the linked list who are not really active (Maddux, Mussina, Pedro, etc.), there are really only 29 pitchers currently in big league camps with 100 wins.

    despite 322 big league wins…the A’s won the exhibition match 10-8, a wins a win :)

How many of the three figure to be on the Dodger’s opening day roster? Did Schmidt look like he had anything left? Dumping him was a good move on the part of the Giants, especially since he has not done much for the Dodgers.

I’d say none of them will be with the Dodgers on opening day. Schmidt actually looked OK, but there’s a long way to go before he can be pitching in the majors again.

Jeff, I heard from a source that Chavez is done for the year, and his career is over. Can you confirm?

He threw and took ground balls this morning, so I find that pretty unlikely. I’ll be sure to ask him in the morning if his career is over, though.
