I’m chatting again Friday at noon

Posted By on March 11, 2009 10:10 am

I will be in Goodyear getting ready to watch the A’s and Indians, but I’ll do a little chat from the press box there. I’ll be happy to chat about the Giants, too. I’ll be watching them today against Japan. Tim Lincecum is pitching. I’ll post some stuff from here later today.

Start thinking of your questions. The chat went really well last time, so hopefully we’ll have another good one.

Plug your email into the box on the right and you’ll get a reminder.

  1. Hi Jeff,

I have a couple of draft related questions.

First, do elite high school players and their advisors/agents often try to dictate who drafts them? For instance, I find it surprising that Jason Heyward lasted to the 14th pick in 2007 and am suspicious why the team that finally selected him was the team in his own backyard, the Braves. I think it is totally conceivable that Heyward’s advisors could have put out the word that he would choose to go to college unless he was selected by the Braves or any other team he favored. Although I am glad the Giants actually selected Bumgarner, they could also have used a prospect like Heyward in their system. And this year, since the Giants select right before the Braves, I wonder if such a scenario could play out with Donovan Tate, who hails from the Georgia region and who could be one of the most sought after highschoolers in this draft.

Second, has anyone’s performance in the Cape Cod League or a summer wood bat tournament caught the Giants’ eye? I know they give a lot of consideration to players’ showings with wood bats so I’m curious if the Giants’ scouts have been impressed with any particular players.

    Thanks for taking my questions.

That question sounded familiar, and this is why.

Seriously, the idea is to ask the questions during the chat on Friday.

    See you then.

  3. Oops, sorry Jeff. I actually never saw the reply to the original question, so I thought I’d try again. Thanks for the quick answer… the first time!
