I'm torn because with Duke's injury history and impending free agency the need for another top of the rotation arm is there and Sheets can be had at a major discount for a multi-year deal.

But if it's Randy Wolf or Orlando Cabrera, I'll take Cabrera. The A's have 6 capable starters as of now, and Cahill, Anderson, and Mazzaro all have an outside shot at making the rotation already. BR/BR/Reminds me a lot of the '99 team that traded for Appier midseason. That team was on the brink of the postseason and needed a front line starter to put them over.

Either way the A's should be seen as the favorite to win the West.

Well, if it were me, I'd rather have that one extra veteran arm there to make sure that the young guys really have to earn their way up, rather than just getting thrown in there quickly because everyone else has failed. The A's supposedly had some money to spend, and unless they are specifically now saving that money for Orlando Cabrera or have decided not spend it (because of the economy), I think they ought to use it on a starter.

or they are confident in cahill, anderson, simmons, mazzaro, etc pitching at some point in 09 that maybe gio, braden, outman, etc maybe can pull an 08 version of eveland, smith and have several solid months in the majors.
