By the way, since writing this I talked to an "industry source" (remember, that's code for "an executive or scout from a team not related to this transaction") who said that Abreu actually wouldn't be such a terrible fit for the Giants because he's not really not as bad defensively as he was last year. In the past, he'd been just slightly below average. If the Giants believe last year's defense was a fluke, and they can get an .800+ OPS guy with some speed for cheap, they ought to do it, this person told me. Take that for what it's worth.

Personally, I still wouldn't do it. Even if he does play better defense in '09 than '08, he'd need to play a lot better to handle AT&T's right field. And I'm not even sure he'd still be an .800+ OPS guy at AT&T.

I think this would actually be a pretty good pickup for us ONLY if we traded Winn. We would replace Winn's bat with Abreu's which is an upgrade, Abreu is not a HR hitter anyway so I would be fine with getting 12-15 out of him, he is an OBP guy that also drives in runs and can also steal 20 bags. Sign him and bat him cleanup, hes a better option than Molina.BR/BR/He also hit over .300 vs lefties and he is a type A free agent but since he wasnt offered arbitration, he wouldnt cost us a draft pick.

Not only would he suffer in AT&T, he was boosted by Yankee Stadium's short RF fence, he hit 14 homers at home, only 6 homers on the road. He could end up below 10 homers if he played a full season with us.
